Introduction

Welcome to the Throughput Academy's course 'On Time In Half The Time: Part 1 - Why SDBR reduces manufacturing lead times and improves due date performance'.

Thanks for joining the course! We really appreciate it and hope you enjoy participating. We hope to teach you a lot about the Simplified Drum-Buffer-Rope (SDBR) approach and why it is such an incredibly powerful approach to managing a manufacturing plant.

In this unit, we introduce the course and will explain the following:

  1. What you can expect to learn during this course.
  2. How the course works.
  3. The structure of the modules and units you will complete.
  4. What this course can - and can't - do.
  5. What you should do next.

What will I learn on the course?

There are eight key learning objectives for the course. After completing whole course you should know:

  1. Where SDBR sits within the wider context of the Theory of Constraints.
  2. Why high inventory manufacturing environments have long manufacturing lead times and poor due date performance.
  3. What the simplifying assumptions SDBR makes are and where SDBR can’t be used.
  4. Why choking the release of raw materials drains inventory and reduces lead times.
  5. Why the Buffer Management priority system further reduces lead time and improves due date performance.
  6. How Capacity Constrained Resources reduce flow through the plant and 12 practical ways to significantly increase capacity.
  7. How to create a focused, effective and sustainable process of ongoing improvement.
  8. How to continue your development in the Theory of Constraints.

How is the course structured?

The course is structured around five modules and there are several units within each of those modules. The five modules:

  1. Introduce the course and how to complete it successfully.
  2. Explain some of the common misconceptions in manufacturing that cause high inventory, long lead time environments.
  3. Introduce the SDBR approach and where it can and where it can't be used.
  4. Explain the four key elements of the SDBR approach and what happens when they're implemented.
  5. Detail how to continue your development and get more help.

How does the course work?

The modules and units in the course follow a logical sequence. Therefore, it is IMPORTANT that you follow the correct sequence, progressing through each of the modules - from Module 1 through to Module 5 - and the units that accompany each of the modules.

Each unit has its own webpage. On each page you will find a consistent and easy to navigate structure that makes it easy to find your way around. Each  unit has the following sections:

  • Introduction - a brief summary of what the module/unit is about.
  • What you should do - simple, clear instructions for you to follow.
  • Learning objectives - what you should learn by completing the module/unit.
  • Video presentation - this is where you will find most of the course content.
  • Unit notes - where we re-emphasise key content or give additional helpful pointers.
  • Assignment - some units have assignments which will, if completed, help you understand the course content better and consolidate your learning.

What can't this course do?

This is an educational course, designed to teach participants about SDBR. It cannot substitute for expert consulting advice on how to implement SDBR in your environment and you should not treat this course as such.
