Introduction

In this module, we introduce the improvement methodology that Simplified Drum-Buffer-Rope (SDBR) is drawn from - the Theory of Constraints (TOC) - and its founder, Dr Eliyahu M. Goldratt. This helps to place SDBR in the proper context and credit those responsible for creating this incredibly powerful approach to organisation - and in this specific case, manufacturing - improvement.

We also recommend some pre-reading to help you make the most of the learning offered in this course. It is, of course, optional for you to do this but highly recommended.

M104 Assignment - Pre-reading

In this assignment, we encourage you to complete some pre-reading that will enable you to make the most of the learning experience offered by this course.

Firstly, if you haven't already, we strongly recommend you read Dr Eli Goldratt's classic business novel 'The Goal'. Unlike stereotypical dry management textbooks, Goldratt explains the principles of TOC through a page turner of a novel. Highly recommended introductory text to TOC.

Goldratt's article 'Standing on the shoulders of giants' examines the differences and similarities between Ford's Mass Production system, Ohno's Toyota Production System and Goldratt's Simplified Drum-Buffer -Rope approach. It is a superb read for a manufacturing professional keen to further develop their understanding and capability.
